What is a persistent URL?

A persistent or durable URL will return you to the same article every time, whereas a dynamic URL may change with every search and may 'time-out' after you've completed a session.

When writing a research paper it is important to allow your reader access to the articles you've drawn from. Your bibliographic citations should, wherever possible, include persistent URLs to your online sources.

Library databases vary in how they name their persistent URLs. Learning to find them is a skill that gets better with practice.

The list on this page will help with some of our databases. If you need help please ask a librarian.
