Exploring Diverse Books: Diversity Day

Exploring Diverse Books

Exploring Diverse Books

Everyone deserves to see themselves and their experiences through characters in books. Fiction can also provide readers a window into lives and experiences that may be new or unfamiliar to them, a window that can transform into a sliding glass door that can be walked through in imagination. These are some of the many reasons we need exposure to a diverse range of characters in books that we read and/or books that are written by a diversity of authors. Come to the library to find out about more reasons to read diverse books, find diverse books that you might like to read, and share your thoughts about your favorite ones.

Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors

"Books are sometimes WINDOWS, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange."

"These windows are also SLIDING GLASS DOORS, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author."

"When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a MIRROR. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience."
